AMA Advocacy Priorities

  • Accelerating change in medical education to align physician training and education with the evolving health care system

  • Improving health outcomes and reducing chronic disease by developing programs to help educate medical students to provide high-quality care to the diverse patient population

  • Enhancing professional satisfaction and practice sustainability by ensuring young physicians areempowered to practice in today’s environment

Recent MSV Student Initiatives

  • Secured $2.5 million in annual GME funding to open new residency spots in Virginia – this funding has been included in every state budget since 2015

  • Allow for the implementation of a safe needle exchange program (Virginia was previously one of 13 states that did not allow for a safe needle exchange)

  • Revise the Code of Virginia to provide legal protection from being persecuted for drug related charges when calling in an opioid overdose – removing roadblocks for those in need to receive life saving care

  • Educate legislators on the complex components of medical education which has in turn helped MSV on multiple legislative issues
