Student Events and Lunch Meeting Reminders

·         All meetings, room reservations, and special events should be approved first through Student Affairs.

Fall Club Fair: Monday, September 8, 2014 12:00-1:00 PM

·         Interested in getting more involved in student activities? Come browse the diverse organizations EVMS has to offer at the Fall Student Club Fair!

Heart of Ghent 10K and Kid’s Fun Run: Saturday, September 20th Starts @ 8:00 AM

·         The heart of Ghent race now supports EVMS! If you’re going to run in the race: Please remember to choose the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center as your charity of choice!

·         To register to run or volunteer for the Heart of Ghent 10K:  http://heartofghent10k.mettleevents.com/registration.html

·         If you are volunteering:  after you click the volunteer tab you will need to select our group (EVMS) and put in the password to sign up to volunteer.  The password is EVMSHOGVOL.  EVMS volunteers will be course marshals.

·         All runners and volunteers are invited to the post-race party with music, food, etc.!

Ø  LOCATION: Start and finish  on Colley Avenue in Ghent across from Blair Middle School- 1520 Colley Avenue Norfolk, VA 23517

HRT GoPass 365 for $75- Ride the Tide

·         We are pleased to be able to offer a limited number of year-long GoPass365 cards at the existing price of $75. These cards will be valid from July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015. 

·         The new cards, which allow usage of HRT buses,  The Tide light rail, the Elizabeth River Ferry, and The Max buses, will be available to EVMS students on a first-come, first-served basis in the Office of Student Affairs, first floor Lewis Hall beginning June 24. Only checks (made payable to EVMS) or cash for the entire $75 will be accepted.  Please be sure to obtain a receipt.

·         Incoming students may have the opportunity to purchase passes during Orientation, depending on availability.  We will let you know the status of these sometime during Orientation week. 

·         IMPORTANT: 

o   Please note that the current “red” GoPass365 cards will not be valid after June 30, 2013.

o   The new “blue” cards must be used with your EVMS ID Badge. 

o   The GoPass365 card must be legibly endorsed on the back in permanent ink.

·         AMA/MSV Physician Panel For current/incoming students to learn about opportunities in the AMA and MSV and how getting involved can further cultivate their career in medicine.

Surgery Club Lunch Meeting: Tuesday, August 26th 12:00-1:00 PM

·         This will be an introductory meeting for surgery club in which we hope to bring together anyone interested in the specialty.

·          We will be discussing some events that we have ideas for as well as introduce students to Dr. Collins.

·         This will be an informal discussion about what the students would like from the club this year in terms of activities and an introduction to other past members and those interested in surgery.

ODU- Gym Membership and Intramural Information: Wednesday, August 27th 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         The ODU recreation center is a 15,000 sq. ft. multi-level fitness center.

·         Students have the option of joining the ODU intramural teams as part of their membership

Sail Nauticus Information: Thursday, August 28th 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         Want to learn to sail? Sail Nauticus is a community sailing center!

·         $175 Membership offers full access to our brand new fleet of eight Harbor 20 sailboats, along with opportunities to participate in sailing and social events throughout the year.  And the best part is, no sailing experience is required to join; as a community sailing center, we foster an atmosphere of mentorship and ongoing education to help guide your growth as a sailor. Membership includes:

Red Cross Blood Drive: Thursday, August 28th 11:00 AM- 4:00 PM

·         As part of the American Red Cross campaign "100 Days of Summer.  100 days of Hope" the Red Cross club at EVMS will host a blood drive.

·           To schedule an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org and enter EVMS as the sponsor code.

·         Walk-up donors are welcome.

·         MD17 invites you to attend the first POETS (Put Off Everything Tomorrow Is Saturday) of the 14-15' year!

·         All students, new and returning, are invited to come out and socialize after a long week of work.

First Responder to Crisis Incident Training: Thursday, August 28th 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM

·         EVMS Police and Public Safety invites you to learn the art of using verbal skills to de-escalate crisis situations.

·         Instructor Bio- Officer Bostjancic is a police officer with over 31 years of experience in law enforcement. He currently works at EVMS.

·         Officer Bostjancic retired from the Norfolk Police Department where he was the Sergeant in charge of the Hostage Crisis Negotiation Team. He is currently the Virginia Director for the International Association and training of Hostage Negotiators. He has assisted the CIA in forming and training their Negotiation Team. Officer Bostjancic is certified in 11 states as an expert witness in crisis negotiation and civil litigation.

Weekly Events

Mobile Produce Market: Every Wednesday 11:00 AM- 2:00 PM

·         Food is Medicine Mobile Market is on campus every Wednesday, 11am-2pm, and throughout the summer

·         In collaboration with Five Points Community Farm Market, a mobile van with fresh will be on the Townbank Lawn (outside Lester Hall)

·         Cash, credit/debit cards, EBT cards accepted

·         Looking for EVMS student volunteers to sign up for nutrition education on market days, 12-1pm - look out for the sign-up sheet!

·         FIM will also be selling grocery totes ($3)!

EVMS Knitting & Crochet Club: Every Thursday 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         The EVMS Knitting / Crochet club is a no dues casual club. 

·         Don’t know how to knit or crochet?  We’ll teach you!

·         For our beginners we’ve got some knitting needles you can borrow and some scrap yarn you can have!

·         (Eventually beginners you’ll want to bring 100% cotton yarn a crochet hook G / H/ I or if you want to learn to knit size 7 bamboo or wooden knitting needles.  You can knit a dish rag!)

·         Everyone else just bring the project you are working on.  (Forgot your project?  Come anyway!)

·         Lunch is not provided.  If you want to bring your lunch with you please do.
