Updates from Student Affairs

New Book Store Manager

·         We are pleased to announce that the EVMS Bookstore is now under new management.  Please join us in welcoming Michelle Haines as she begins her new position as Retail Store Manager.

·         Michelle has been servicing customers and providing sales support for over fifteen years, spending several years in various managerial roles.  She will be working closely with EVMS and the Bookstore staff to enhance customer satisfaction and provide the best possible experience to our students and faculty.

·         Keep an eye out for exciting updates along the way as well as the arrival of new items on the shelves!

 

Club Storage Space: Clean Up- Monday, February 2nd

·         Shared club storage space is for clubs that put on yearly, large events (ex: NEST, Med Wars)

·         Clubs that put on smaller events and need a space to keep plates and plastic cutlery should have received a locker from Vera Potts Anderson

·         The club storage space is NOT for class programs. If your class currently has items in the club storage area please remove it by the end of the week.

·         The storage space will be cleaned out Monday, February 2nd

Brock Scholar- Harriet Washington: Wednesday, January 28th 6:00- 7:00 PM

·         Brock Scholar in collaboration with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion

·         Harriet Washington is an award-winning medical writer and author giving a talk on Ethics, Ebola and History.

·         All students are invited to this lunch lecture concerning LGBT healthcare given by Judy Wessell

The EVMS Commencement Website is Now Live

·         The EVMS Commencement website is now live and can be accessed from the EVMS homepage. The site contains all 2015 commencement-related information including schedules, instructions and deadlines. It is a comprehensive source of information for all faculty and graduates, as well as their families and guests.

·         IMPORTANT: All graduating students and faculty must register their intent to participate in Commencement and order regalia online by March 6, 2015.

·         Graduates, please be sure to review the checklist for other important dates and deadlines.

·         Be sure to consult www.evms.edu/commencement regularly for upcoming deadlines and announcements related to graduation.

Upcoming Events

MPH Warm Clothes Donation Drive: Now through February 6th

·         Winter in Hampton Roads can be unpredictable. Students from the Master of Public Health Program are hosting a donation drive to benefit many in our community. Join us in helping our neighbors stay warm for the rest of the winter season.  Please consider donating new or gently used items to benefit folks staying in shelters in Hampton Roads.  All items will be delivered to local community outreach agencies for distribution.

·         Donations of the following items would be appreciated:

o   Gently used or new sweatshirts or sweaters, gloves, scarves and hats.

Global Health Coalition: Wednesday, January 28th 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         Please join us to hear Dr. Brown's presentation on global malnutrition.

·         Dr. Brown is a 40 year veteran of global health projects in Africa, an expert in primary village health care, childhood malnutrition, and reproductive health, and is currently a lecturer for the EVMS MPH program.

Pediatrics/ EIMG Lunch Meeting: Wednesday, January 28th 12:00-1:00 PM

·         We are holding our first Pediatrics/EIMG meeting of 2015

·         We will be hearing from Dr. Ramirez, a Pediatric EM Physician at CHKD, and Stepfanie Kern, a PA who works in pediatric surgery, trauma, and burns.

Dermatology Club Lunch Meeting: Wednesday, January 28th 12:00-1:00 PM

·         We are very excited to have Dr. Pariser from the Department of Dermatology speak to use about the medical and historical aspects of syphilis.

·          Dr Pariser is a native of Norfolk, VA who completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton, went to MCV for medical school and then completed his residency at the University of Miami.

·         He is board certified in Dermatology and Dermatological Immunology/Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology and has been in practice for over 30 years.

Pathology Interest Group Meeting: Friday, January 30th 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         First meeting of the 2014-15 academic year.

·         Open to all EVMS students interested in Pathology.

·         First meeting will be to elect officers, obtain a list of interested students, & “Career Opportunities in Pathology”. Lunch will be provided for the first 30 students (bring your own drink).

·         Future meetings: “Lunch & Learn” seminars about pathology as a career; discussion panel of M4 students applying for pathology residencies; and possibly arranging “field trips” off campus.

Haiti HOPES Fundraiser at 80/20 Burger Bar: Friday, January 30th 5:00-9:00 PM

·         Support Haiti HOPES by swinging by 80/20 Burger Bar this Friday night- there will be a band

·         Cover is $5 and goes to Haiti HOPES team

Military Medicine Club Speaker lunch: Wednesday, February 4th 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         The military medicine club will be hosting guest speaker LT Andrew E. Mancusi-Ungaro, M.D. of the United States

·         LT Mancusi-Ungaro is an Undersea Medical Officer and will be speaking about his experiences and answering any questions students may have about military medicine.

Haiti Hopes Fundraiser: Valentines Swing Dance- Friday, February 13th 7:00-10:00 PM

·         Come out to this fun event to raise money for Haiti Hopes

·         Swing dance lessons will be provided from 7-8 PM and then free dancing with a DJ from  8-10 PM

·         Come dressed in your best 1940s attire

·         Tickets $10 in advanced, $12 at the door

·         Refreshments will be provided by the Haiti Hopes Bake Sale

School Wide Talent Show: Sunday, February 15th 5:00PM -7:00 PM

·         We know that there is a LOT of talent here on campus. We would like to invite YOU (and your friends) to perform! We encourage all types of performances!

·         Whether you’re singing, dancing, doing standup comedy, juggling, etc., we would love to have you share your talents!

·         This will be a fun night to hang out with your friends, classmates, and students from all of the programs at EVMS. Dinner will be provided and great PRIZES will be awarded for the top contestants!

2015 Summer Scholars Program!

·         Attention M-1s!  The EVMS/CHKD Department of Pediatrics is now accepting applications for paid, summer research internships for college seniors and first-year medical or graduate students through the 2015 Summer Scholars Program!

·         Students will work on pre-selected research projects under the mentorship of EVMS faculty members.  Projects will involve clinical, pre-clinical/laboratory, public health and behavioral research.  There will also be opportunities to shadow pediatricians and specialists at CHKD.  Students selected for the program will receive a stipend for these full-time positions (May 18 – July 30, 2015).

·         The Blocker YMCA has given EVMS Swim Club two lanes for practicing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30-8:30 PM.

EVMS Knitting & Crochet Club: Every Thursday 12:00- 1:00 PM

·         The EVMS Knitting / Crochet club is a no dues casual club. 

·         Don’t know how to knit or crochet?  We’ll teach you!

·         For our beginners we’ve got some knitting needles you can borrow and some scrap yarn you can have!

·         (Eventually beginners you’ll want to bring 100% cotton yarn a crochet hook G / H/ I or if you want to learn to knit size 7 bamboo or wooden knitting needles.  You can knit a dish rag!)

·         Everyone else just bring the project you are working on.  (Forgot your project?  Come anyway!)

·         Lunch is not provided.  If you want to bring your lunch with you please do.
