Meet New Students at a Norfolk Tides Game: Sunday, August 17th at 6:05 PM

·         Take me out to the ballgame! Hang out with your new friends in a designated seating area for EVMS and watch Hampton Roads’ minor-league baseball team, the Norfolk Tides, play ball at Harbor Park, located in downtown Norfolk on the Elizabeth River.

·         Student Affairs will purchase tickets and sell them throughout Orientation week. The discounted tickets cost $11

·         If you are interested in going please sign up on the Google doc. This document will help us know how many tickets to pre-purchase.

12th annual Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poetry Awards

·         Baylor College of Medicine announces the 12th Annual Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poetry Awards.

·         This annual contest honors the legendary, preeminent cardiovascular surgeon, pioneering medical scientist, gifted medical educator, prolific author and scholar, and passionate advocate of optimal healthcare throughout the world.  Dr. Michael E. DeBakey strongly advocated a role for the humanities in medical education and in the development of a full, enriching intellectual life.

·         Guidelines: 

1.      Only original poetry on a medical subject and by undergraduates currently enrolled in accredited United States medical schools is eligible.

2.      By a copy of the student photograph I.D. card, entrants must document enrollment in an accredited American medical school in pursuit of the M.D. degree.

3.      Each medical student may submit only one poem, not to exceed 2 pages.

4.      Entries must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2014.

5.      Poems must be on a medical subject.

6.      Poems must be:

a.      Original, not published or under consideration for publication, and not having previously received a poetry award.

b.      Limited to two (2) pages, double-spaced.

c.       In English; no translations from other languages.

d.      Printed on 8.5 x 11 inch bond paper.

e.      Accompanied by a cover page, with the following information:

                                                                           i.      Poet’s name

                                                                         ii.      Current mailing and e-mailing addresses, telephone, and fax numbers if available.

                                                                        iii.      Copy of photographed student I.D. card documenting medical school enrollment.

f.        Submitted in six (6) hard (print) copies, as well as emailed to Peyton Davis (Peyton.davis@bcm.edu).

7.      Entries will not be acknowledged.

8.      A distinguished panel of qualified judges will assess the poems.

9.      Winners will be announced in July, 2015.

a.      The first prize recipient will receive a cash prize of $1,000.00

b.      The second prize recipient will receive a cash prize of $500.00

c.       The third prize recipient will receive a cash prize of $250.00

10. The first-prize poem will become the property of the Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poetry Awards program and will be submitted to a major medical periodical for consideration for publication.  If it is accepted for publication, the publisher will own copyright.

HRT GoPass 365 for $75- Ride the Tide

·         We are pleased to be able to offer a limited number of year-long GoPass365 cards at the existing price of $75. These cards will be valid from July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015. 

·         The new cards, which allow usage of HRT buses,  The Tide light rail, the Elizabeth River Ferry, and The Max buses, will be available to EVMS students on a first-come, first-served basis in the Office of Student Affairs, first floor Lewis Hall beginning June 24. Only checks (made payable to EVMS) or cash for the entire $75 will be accepted.  Please be sure to obtain a receipt.

·         Incoming students may have the opportunity to purchase passes during Orientation, depending on availability.  We will let you know the status of these sometime during Orientation week. 

·         IMPORTANT: 

o   Please note that the current “red” GoPass365 cards will not be valid after June 30, 2013.

o   The new “blue” cards must be used with your EVMS ID Badge. 

o   The GoPass365 card must be legibly endorsed on the back in permanent ink.

Upcoming Events

Mobile Produce Market: Every Wednesday 11:00 AM- 2:00 PM

·         Food is Medicine Mobile Market is coming to campus!

·         In collaboration with Five Points Community Farm Market, a mobile van with fresh produce is coming to Townebank Lawn (outside Lester Hall)!

·         Opening day on this Wednesday, April 16, 2014 rain or shine!

·         Open weekly every Wednesday, 11am-2pm, and throughout the summer

·         Cash, credit/debit cards, EBT cards accepted

·         Looking for EVMS student volunteers to sign up for nutrition education on market days, 12-1pm - look out for the sign-up sheet!

·         FIM will also be selling grocery totes ($5)!

Yoga: Every Wednesday and Friday noon lunch hour

·         The Mind and Meditation Club is introducing beginner's yoga every Wednesday from 12:15 to 12:45 on the Townebank Lawn outside Lester Hall

·         We are also holding a longer multilevel yoga session every Friday from 12 to 1 in Lewis Hall 1116

·         All are welcome, including those with no experience as well as faculty and staff; mats are provided

First Responder to Crisis Incident Training: Thursday, July 24th 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM

·         EVMS Police and Public Safety invites you to learn the art of using verbal skills to de-escalate crisis situations.

·         Instructor Bio- Officer Bostjancic is a police officer with over 31 years of experience in law enforcement. He currently works at EVMS.

·         Officer Bostjancic retired from the Norfolk Police Department where he was the Sergeant in charge of the Hostage Crisis Negotiation Team. He is currently the Virginia Director for the International Association and training of Hostage Negotiators. He has assisted the CIA in forming and training their Negotiation Team. Officer Bostjancic is certified in 11 states as an expert witness in crisis negotiation and civil litigation.
